The Parking Space

Jerry:Why should I have to park my car in a compact space just because it's a compact car? That's discrimination. My car has the right to have its ass hang out in the parking lot like any other car.

Jerry:It's like 'compact jeans' - you know, for people who are a little more compressed. They come with their own parking validation.

Kramer:Jerry, I got bad news about your car.

Jerry:What happened?

Kramer:It got towed. Again.

Jerry:There's no difference.

Kramer:Oh, come on! You gotta know. You always gotta know everything!

Kramer:Jerry, I know something you don't know.

Jerry:What?

Kramer:Uh-uh. You gotta guess.

Jerry:I don't want to guess. Just tell me.

Kramer:No, come on. Take a guess.

Jerry:Kramer, I'm not going to guess. What is it?

Kramer:One guess.

Jerry:I don't have a guess! Just tell me!

Kramer:No!

Jerry:Alright, alright. I must know!

Jerry:Come on, you have to tell me now!

Kramer:Not today, pal.

Jerry:Come on, Kramer, lend me twenty bucks.

Kramer:No, you gotta put some beg into it. You're not selling it.

Jerry:What are you talking about?

Kramer:You gotta want it. Beg like you mean it.

Jerry:Can you spare some change?

Kramer:No, no, no. You gotta commit to it. You're not selling it. Here, watch me.

Kramer:Spare some change? See? You feel the need. You believe it. That's the difference between a panhandler and a bum.

Jerry:Why wasn't I invited to the party? Everyone else was there. I saw the pictures on Facebook.

Kramer:Jerry, I don't like you.

Jerry:What? You don't like me? We're neighbors! We've known each other for years!

Kramer:Yeah, well, I still don't like you.

Elaine:That hat looks great on you.

George:Yeah? You think so?

Elaine:Yeah, it really does.

George:You know, I was thinking... in the '20s, when all the men wore hats like this, that must have been a bald man's paradise.

Elaine:What do you mean?

George:Well, nobody knew who was bald and who wasn't. A bald man could just put on a hat and he's got hair.

George:I can't wear a hat all the time. What happens when I take it off? People see the baldness, they're disappointed. It's like opening a box of cereal and finding out there's no prize inside.

Jerry:Why don't you want to be on Kramer's bad side?

Kramer:I'm like ice, buddy.

Jerry:So what did Mike say about me?

Kramer:Why do you always need to know what people say about you?

Jerry:I don't need to know. I'm just curious.

Kramer:That's the same thing. You're like a woman.

Kramer:You gotta beg, Jerry. You gotta put some beg into it.

Jerry:I am begging you!

Kramer:No, no, no. You gotta put some BEG into it!

Jerry:Your secret is safe with me. I'm like a vault.

Jerry:A vault! A locked vault! Nobody's getting in there.

Jerry:It's Fort Knox! It's the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier! It's a vault!

Kramer:Mike thinks you're a phoney.

Jerry:A phoney? What do you mean I'm a phoney?

Kramer:A big phoney. Big one.

Jerry:A big phoney?! I'm not a phoney! What did I do that's so phoney?

Jerry:Wait a minute. You told me this information, and now I can't un-know it. I'm trapped!

Kramer:You begged me.

George:My equilibrium is thrown off. I had the mirror in one place for so long, and now it's in a different place. My whole sense of balance is off.

George:I'm an excellent driver. I have excellent reflexes.

George:I can handle anything that comes up on the road.

George:I can't park in a garage. My father couldn't park in a garage, his father couldn't park in a garage. It's genetic.

George:Why would I pay to park in a garage? That's like paying for sex. You know what I'm saying? You go out there, you take your chances, maybe you get lucky, find a spot on the street for free. Why would I pay?

George:Look at this spot. It's perfect. I don't even need to take it to dinner.

George:You know, I'm an excellent parallel parker. I can pull into a spot like nobody's business. If only there was a way to make money off of this.

George:You know, parking is not just about finding a spot. It's a complex geometric puzzle. You've got angles, distances, spatial relationships. Most people, they just pull in randomly. But me? I calculate. I measure. I triangulate.

George:The average person doesn't realize that a successful parallel park requires an understanding of basic trigonometry. The width of the space, the length of your vehicle, the proximity to other cars... it's all connected.

George:You see, it's not something you can teach. You either have it or you don't. I have it. It's like a gift, you know? Some people are born with it. I was born with the ability to find a parking spot.

George:I was parking the car!

Mike:You were just sitting there.

George:I was backing in!

Mike:You weren't even moving.

George:You know, there's an unwritten rule about parking. You back in, you get the spot. That's it. That's the law.

Mike:What are you talking about? You pull in headfirst like a normal person.

George:Headfirst? HEADFIRST?! You back in because you need the room to get out. It's about geometry, it's about planning ahead.

Mike:Nobody backs in, George.

George:That's because nobody thinks anymore. That's the problem with society right there.

George:Wait, wait, wait. Before we do this, I need the good chair. I'm not fighting anybody from a bad chair.

Elaine:Well, what happened was, these extremely wild teenagers, in a pack, they just came out of nowhere and they smashed into your car with rocks and sticks.

Elaine:He's a fantastic driver!

Jerry:Elaine, we just watched him hit that parked car.

Elaine:Well, he's fantastic at other things.

Elaine:I think it was a gun.

Elaine:Yeah, so anyway, they just kind of... grazed the building.

Jerry:Are you two okay? That's the important thing.

Jerry:The car... we can replace the car.

Jerry:These kids, they're out there somewhere, probably looking for us right now.

George:What?

George:You know what? Forget the parking spot. I've got a real problem here. My cuticles are killing me. Look at this. This is a disaster. I can't even hold a steering wheel properly anymore.

Jerry:Yeah, well, I'm probably a lot better than you.

Mike:Well, bully for you.

Mike:You know, Jerry's a real phoney.

Kramer:I told you!

Jerry:I'm standing right here.

George Costanza:I'm not giving up this space. I'm sleeping in the car.

Jerry Seinfeld:George, you can't sleep in the car.

George Costanza:Why not? People sleep in their cars all the time.

Jerry Seinfeld:Not in Manhattan they don't.

George Costanza:Well, I'm doing it. This is my space now. I'll die for this space.

Mike:You're looking good, Kramer.

Kramer:Thanks. I've been eating a very specific cereal. I have it custom made. It's a precise blend of different grains and clusters. The ratio has to be exact - 40% bran flakes, 30% honey clusters, 20% raisins, 10% marshmallows. Not 11%, not 9% - 10%.

Kramer:I have a guy in Queens who makes it for me. He uses a scale, measuring cups. One time he was off by half a raisin and I could taste it immediately. I sent it back.

George:You want to pull in front-first? That's a criminal getaway! You're sitting there, you can't see anything. A cop pulls up behind you, you don't even know he's there!

George:Back-first, you're in control. You can see everything. You see the cop coming, you got an escape route.

Elaine:So I told him we were just minding our own business, and this pack of teenagers came out of nowhere and started harassing us.

George:A pack of teenagers? Where was this?

Elaine:Central Park! What do you want from me? I panicked!

George:That was brilliant! The way you lied to your boss - you're a genius!

Elaine:Oh, I don't know... I just said what came to mind.

George:No, no, that was expert level deception.

Elaine:Well, you know, I guess I do have a gift for it. Who knew?

Elaine:You know, I think lying is like parking. It's inborn.

Jerry:What? We forgot Kramer at the flea market. It happens. It happened to Kevin McCallister. His family forgot him at home, he was fine.

George:That's not the same thing.

Jerry:Why not? He was abandoned, left to fend for himself. Kevin McCallister did it.

Kramer:You told her about the flea market? Jerry, what is wrong with you? You have no judgment!

Jerry:I'm sorry, Kramer.

Kramer:So-so sorry? That's not even a real apology.

Jerry:What do you want from me?

Kramer:I want a real apology, not some half-baked pun.

Ice cream truck driver:My ice cream is melting!

Jerry:Oh, that's a great idea. You should definitely tell him that.

Elaine:Right? I knew you'd understand.

Jerry:No, I mean it. Really commit to it. Make it convincing.

Elaine:Exactly. I'm going to add some details to make it more believable.

George:I was trying to parallel park and I got a little discombobulated.

Elaine:Discombobulated? What does that even mean? I mean, if you're discombobulated, doesn't that mean at some point you were bobulated?

George:I never said I was a good driver. I said I was a good parker.

Sid:George, you know what your problem is? You're always parking in front of my building. You take up two spaces, sometimes three!

George:Sid, I'm doing the best I can.

Sid:The best you can? Last week you hit my car and didn't even leave a note! The whole neighborhood knows about it.

George:It's not about the space. It's about principle. If I give up this space, what's next? They'll want my spot at the coffee shop, my table at Monk's. Where does it end? This is about standing up for what's right. This is about freedom. This is about... this is about parking.

Stranger:You can't park here, kid.

Child:You're not my father!

Jerry:So what do you want to be when you grow up?

Matthew:I don't know, maybe a doctor or a lawyer.

Jerry:That's great. You know those guys make a lot of money.

Matthew:Really?

Jerry:Oh yeah, tons of money. But then you got taxes, mortgages, alimony...

Matthew:Alimony?

Jerry:Yeah, when you get divorced. And you will get divorced.

Matthew:I will?

Jerry:Probably. Then there's car payments, health insurance, dental work. It never ends.

Matthew:So I won't have any money?

Jerry:Not really, no.

Matthew:But I thought doctors made a lot of money!

Jerry:On paper, sure. But by the time you're done paying for everything, you'll be eating beans out of a can in a studio apartment.

Jerry:So when are you due?

Woman:I'm not pregnant.

Jerry:Oh, well you look like you are.

Woman:I'm not pregnant!

Jerry:Okay, okay. Boy or girl?

Jerry:So I'm supposed to just let this go? Mike calls me a phoney and I'm supposed to what, pretend I didn't hear it?

George:Jerry, you're obsessing. Let it go.

Jerry:Let it go? George, he put it out there. It's out there now. You can't just put something out there and expect people to ignore it.

Elaine:What are you going to do, confront him?

Jerry:Yes! I'm going to confront him. I have to clear the air.

Kramer:But Jerry, once you open that vault, you can't close it again.

Jerry:That's exactly my point! He opened the vault! I'm not opening anything. He's the one who said I was a phoney. Now I'm supposed to just seal it back up like nothing happened? How do I seal a vault I didn't open?

George:You see, this is what's wrong with society. Nobody parks headfirst anymore. It's all backwards parking, sideways parking... You know what this leads to? The complete and utter breakdown of civilization as we know it. First the parking goes, then the whole thing crumbles. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it didn't fall in a day either. But it fell. And you know why? Nobody was parking headfirst.

George:Run!

Mike:See, 'phoney' doesn't mean fake anymore. It means good. Like, Michael Jordan? Total phoney.

Police Officer:Alright, let me get this straight. You parked here legally?

George:Yes, officer. Perfectly legal spot.

Police Officer:But the sign says no parking Tuesday and Thursday.

Kramer:Yeah, but today is Wednesday!

Police Officer:It's Saturday.

Police Officer:I've been a cop for 23 years and I have no idea what's going on here.

George:Eventually you're gonna have to move that car.

Mike:Why? Where am I going?

George:I don't know, but you can't just leave it here forever.

Mike:Why not? I'm not going anywhere.

George:Well, what about work?

Mike:I don't have a job.

George:Neither do I.

Jerry:You know what the problem with New York parking is? It's not just hard to find a spot—it's genuinely dangerous. I watched a guy the other day, he circled a block seven times. Seven times! On the eighth loop, I thought he was going to have a stroke right there in his Camry. And if you find a spot? You better parallel park perfectly, because if you're even six inches too far from the curb, you will get keyed. Absolutely keyed. Some guy will walk by with his keys out like he's on a mission from God. 'Not on my block, buddy. Learn to park.'

Jerry:Parking in New York is like musical chairs, except the music never stops and there are no chairs. It's just people driving around in circles looking for a spot that doesn't exist.

Jerry:I spent forty minutes looking for a parking spot last week. Forty minutes! I could have taken a cab, gone to New Jersey, bought a car, and driven back in that time.

Jerry:You know what car manufacturers should do? They should make parking spaces instead of cars. Just manufacture parking spaces. 'We're not making Cadillacs anymore, we're making parking spaces.' You pull up, there's a space right there waiting for you. 'Congratulations, you just bought a 1994 parking space.'

George · random woman:Congratulations. / What for? / Well, you're pregnant. / What? / You're not pregnant? / No, I'm not pregnant. / Are you sure you're not pregnant? / Yes, I'm sure!

Jerry · George:Do you think I'm a phoney? / What? / Mike thinks I'm a phoney. / He thinks you're a phoney? / But I can't say anything, because I'm not supposed to know.

George · Jerry:You gotta open the vault. / Open my vault?! / Open your vault. / Once I open the vault, it ceases to be a vault.

George:You know why you can't park headfirst? I'll tell you why. Because it signals a breakdown in the social order. Chaos! It reduces us to jungle law.

someone · George · bystander:When can you park headfirst? / Never. / Why are you asking him? / Who's talking to you? / He's right! Never!

George · Mike:What if you got 10 car lengths? Should you pull all the way to the front car? / When do you ever have 10 car lengths? / What about Sundays and holidays? / Please.

Newman · George:That's a great hat. / Really? You like it? / I got it at a flea market today.

George · Newman · Elaine:Hey, George, nice hat. / Yeah, thanks. / Can I try it on? / No! It wouldn't fit you. / Sure, it would. / No! Get out of here, Newman. / Let me try it. / No! Stop it! / Let him try it on. / I don't want him to! / What is wrong with you?

George · Elaine:All right! You wanna try on the hat?! Try on the hat! / Stop it, George! Stop it. I was defending your parking. / Come on, George! / Okay, just keep the hat!

Kramer · Elaine · Mike · Jerry · George:That's it. The fight's already started. I'm going upstairs. Who's coming? Elaine? / Depends on who's going. You going? / I'm not going if he's going! / Me either! / Well, I'm going. / If he's going, I'm not going! / It's your house! / I don't have to go.

Jerry:Like you didn't call me a phoney!

Mike · Kramer · Mike:Why did you tell him?! / He begged me! / He begged you?!

Mike · Jerry:Jerry. I think you completely misunderstood what I said. I meant it in a complimentary way. You know, when people say 'He's bad,' it really means 'He's good.' That sort of thing? / Use it in a sentence. / Man, that Michael Jordan is so phoney.

Police officer · Elaine:All right, you move your car. It's his space. You can't go in headfirst. / Wait a second. Why can't he go in headfirst? / He said the guy was just sitting over there.

George · Mike:You're gonna have to go to the bathroom! / You'll have to go to work! / I don't have a job! / Neither do I!

Jerry:People will kill each other for a parking space in New York. Because they think, 'If I don't get this one, I may never get a space.' You know. 'I'll circle for months until somebody goes out to the Hamptons.'

Jerry:Everybody in New York City knows there's gotta be way more cars than parking spaces. You see cars driving in New York all hours of the night. It's like musical chairs, except everybody sat down around 1964.

Jerry:That's what they should work on. Wouldn't that be great? You go to the auto show, they got that big revolving turntable, and there's nothing on it. 'New from Chrysler: a space.'
